I'm 23 now - what an old fart. The day has arrived without me noticing it much. 23 is the number of the Illuminatus, maybe this has some significance. I feel much happier than a year ago! And yes, I know I'm a boring chap. Just finished my first issue of Mensa Magazine today. Now I don't know what the next steps for me to do will be, but I guess people will tell me what I gotta do in order to get it printed. 76 pages, something like 300 k of text - not bad for 1 month of collecting articles...

Spannend finde ich die Frage, wer welchen Posten bekäme, sollten ÖVP, FPÖ und BZÖ eine Koalition bilden. Der Bundeskanzler würde natürlich der ÖVP gehören. Von FPÖ und BZÖ müssten zumindest die Spitzenleute Spitzenfunktionen bekommen. Vielleicht würde dann Westenthaler Innenminister werden und sich damit einen Wunsch erfüllen, den er bereits im Wahlkampf geäußert hat? Dann würde wohl Strache Vizekanzler werden und vielleicht zusätzlich noch ein Ressort bekommen (fragt sich nur, welches - vielleicht Sport, wie einst Riess-Passer). Die große Frage: Wer würde Bundeskanzler? Die FPÖ will ja nicht mit Schüssel, also würde es da wohl ein Sesselrücken geben. Als mögliche Nachfolger Schüssels an der ÖVP-Parteispitze werden ja derzeit in den Medien Molterer, J. Pröll und Plassnik genannt. Pröll ist in der TV-Konfrontation gegen Strache angetreten, da ist es zwar nicht ausgeschlossen, dass er Kanzler und Strache Vizekanzler wird, aber vielleicht würde man sich aufgrund dieser Umstände doch eher

In the Austrian newspaper "Die Presse", I found an article according to which a survey by the British education ministry has led to the conclusion that making video games such as Tomb Raider, Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario part of the curriculum would be a good idea in order to boost pupils' "thinking and problem solving" skills. On the other hand, I played a lot of video games during my elementary school years myself, and I was a very good student - maybe my success at school was partly due to these games since thanks to video games, I've had a lot of fun and enjoyed life, and so I didn't lose motivation to study! Wie Thomas Maurer in einem vor der Wahl veröffentlichten Kommentar richtig festgestellt hat, ist Jörg Haider einer der großen Verlierer dieses Wahlsonntags. Denn HC Strache hat gezeigt, dass es nicht der Person Haiders bedarf, um ein gutes Ergebnis für die Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs (FPÖ) einzufahren. Gegenüber der Nationalratswahl 2002 konnte die FPÖ trotz der Abspaltung des Bündnis Zukunft Österreich (BZÖ) leichte Gewinne von etwa einem Prozent der Wählerstimmen verbuchen - ganz ohne Dr. Haider, welcher diesmal für das BZÖ trommelte. Die Konklusion: Nicht das "außergewöhnliche Talent" Jörg Haiders, wie Thomas Maurer schrieb, sondern ganz einfach die platten ausländer- und EU-kritischen Parolen, die dieser zu bringen pflegte, sind am Erfolg der FPÖ schuld. Mit ähnlichen Parolen gelingt es auch einem "von Charisma und Begabung unbelasteten" HC Strache, das für diese Politik empfängliche Wählerpublikum anzusprechen.  Andererseits ist Jörg Haider aber auch Gewin

In der heutigen Ausgabe der Gratis-Tageszeitung "Heute" fand ich folgenden Leserbrief: "Die alte Regierung wurde abgewählt, und die SPÖ hat gewonnen. Jetzt können alle zufrieden sein, oder etwa nicht? Ausstieg aus dem Eurofighter-Kauf, auch wenn Österreich Strafe zahlen muss. Abschaffung des Sitzenbleibens in der Schule. It's Monday, October 2nd, and the university year officially starts again. For me it begins with the so-called "practical course" in psychiatry - a subject that is rather interesting for me, so still I hope that it will not be too boring. However, it seems like this "practical course" consists mostly of lectures and seminars, and only on the last day of the week (which will also be the last day of the course) we'll spend one (!) hour at the clinic working with patients. The party I voted for has become #1 in Austria. So the desired change of government is going to come. I'm curious what reforms of the educational systems they'll have. My suggestions would be:   * There should be primary, secondary and tertiary schooling.   * Primary schooling should usually start at an age of 6 years and last until 12.   * It should, however, be possible to start primary schooling at an earlier age if the child appears to be gifted.   * If a child already knows how to read, write and make simple calculations before entering school, then the child should be allowed to start at the 2nd form.   * Secondary schooling should usually start at 12 and last until 18.   * Tertiary schooling (university, university of applied sciences and related institutions) should start after finishing secondary school.   * It should be possible to skip up as many grades as you like both in primary and secondary schooling. On Sunday we're gonna have national elections in Austria... There are 7 parties that run for office in all federal states of Austria: the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP, the conservative government party), the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ, a bit less market-oriented than the ÖVP), the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ, right-wing), the Greens (left-liberal), the Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ, founded by former members of the FPÖ who formed the government together with the ÖVP in the last few years), the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ, the name says it) and a platform led by former SPÖ politician Hans-Peter Martin. In some states, there are also some other parties, but they have little chances. Probably the ÖVP, SPÖ, FPÖ and Greens will enter next parliament, while the others will probably fail to pass the 4% margin which is required to gain a seat in parliament.
